What’s Changing – And Why

For decades, MainSpring House served as a critical safety net for individuals experiencing homelessness in the Greater Brockton area. While its impact was immeasurable, we’ve long recognized the need for a more modern, trauma-informed, and service-enriched shelter model. That vision has now become a reality.

The Smith Family Housing Resource Center includes:

  • 128 emergency shelter beds (for adults, 18+)
  • Dedicated space for wraparound services (including housing navigation, workforce development, and case management)
  • A full commercial kitchen serving daily nutritious meals
  • An on-site community health center, operated by Brockton Neighborhood Health Center (BNHC)
    • Partial services will be available. (Full services will be provided shortly after HRC opening.)

About the Housing Resource Center Model

Our Housing Resource Centers (HRCs) are designed to be more than just emergency shelters — they’re one-stop service hubs that help guests move beyond homelessness toward stability and independence. The HRC model allows FBMS to:

  • Address root causes of homelessness
  • Offer comprehensive, on-site support services
  • Create a more dignified and hopeful experience for guests
  • Partner more effectively with healthcare providers, workforce specialists, and housing agencies

The Smith Family HRC is modeled after our innovative center in Quincy, which has already demonstrated powerful results in helping individuals exit homelessness more quickly and permanently.
